JCBI 13U Takes 2nd in BC Spring Classic
The JCBI 13U baseball team took second place in the six team Columbia BC Spring Classic tournament last weekend. In winners bracket play on Sunday JCBI beat the Mexico Select 4-0 but lost to the Hallsville Mighty Bucks 5-1 in the championship game.
In the 5-1 loss to the Mighty Bucks Dylan Brauner was the starter going 5 innings and Rylie Klosterman pitched 2 innings in relief. The MB took a 1-0 lead into the third when JCBI scored their lone run on a double steal with Jacob Laughlin stealing second and Joey Smith stealing home. The MB held JC to 5 hits with Smith, Sam Atkinson, Corey Beard, Alex Johnson and Dan Haynes each picking up a hit.
Beard and Klosterman combined to pitch a 4 hit shut-out against the Mexico Select in the semifinal. Beard was the starter and pitched 4 innings while picking up 3 strikeouts and allowing 1 walk. Klosterman pitched 2 innings with 1 strikeout and no walks. JC knocked out 8 hits with Klosterman and Johnson picking up 2 singles each; Atkinson, Haynes, Brauner and Scott Stegeman also had singles. Klosterman, Haynes and Stegeman each had 1 RBI with Brauner, Haynes, Laughlin and Johnson scoring the JCBI runs.
In very cold and wet weather pool play JCBI went 2-1 with a 2-0 loss to the Mighty Bucks on Thursday, but won two on Saturday beating the Mexico Select 8-3 and the St. Louis Express 11-5.
In the 2-0 loss to the Mighty Bucks Johnson combined with Beard to hold the Bucks to 3 hits and 2 unearned runs. Johnson had 3 strikeouts and a walk. Haynes had 2 hits with a double and Atkinson and Standlee each had a hit.
In the 8-3 win over Mexico Stegeman was the starting pitcher and Atkinson picked up the win in relief as JC scored 6 runs in the last inning for the win. Stegeman had 3 RBI with a double and a single, Haynes had 2 hits with an RBI, and Brauner, Beard, Erick Standlee and Joseph Limbach each had 1 RBI in the win.
In the 11-5 win over St. Louis Haynes was the starting pitcher and picked up the win with Smith and Klosterman pitching the last inning. JC jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first as St. Louis gave up 8 hits and 6 walks in the inning. Klosterman had a 3 run double. Haynes had 2 hits and 2 RBI, Beard had 2 hits and an RBI, Atkinson and Stegeman each had 2 RBI, and Johnson had an RBI.
